Description:

This carbine is listed as "Officer's Model Krag-Jorgensen carbine, fully engraved and checkered stock, 'Model 1899', Springfield serial #429596, stock dated 1903, with family plaque 'Gen. F.D. Grant/1898'" in the included "Certificate of Provenance and Authenticity" (copy) from John G. Grifftiths, Frederick Dent Grant's direct descendent, who indicates this rifle was among the items passed down to him through the family and first sold in early 2020. As noted, the cartouche on the left side of the stock is dated 1903. In 1903, Frederick Dent Grant (1850-1912) was a brigadier general in the U.S. Army and had recently returned from his post as Military Governor of Pampanga in the Philippines where the Springfield "Krags" were widely used by U.S. forces during the Filipino-American War. It may have been given to in relation to the World's Fair dedication in St. Louis in 1903 where he participated in a military parade or his promotion to major general in 1906 or simply requested by him. In addition to the usual Model 1899 markings and features, it has detailed engraving consisting mainly of scrolls and border designs, checkering on the forend and wrist, an added pistol grip extension, and a silver plaque inscribed "GEN.F.D.GRANT/1898" on the bottom near the toe.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 97% plus blue finish, essentially all of the bright niter blue on the extractor, 98% original dark oil quenched gray casehardened finish on the action, bright case colors on the safety and the buttplate compartment door, crisp markings and engraving, and a few light scratches and marks. The wood is also excellent and has sharp checkering, smooth oiled finish, and some minor scuffs and dings mostly on the left side. Mechanically excellent. This is the most unique and beautiful U.S. Krag carbine we have ever seen, and the fact that it was owned by Ulysses S. Grant's son U.S. Army Major General F.D. Grant certainly adds to being a true National Treasure!
