Description:

This cased set is inscribed "To/Capt Geo W Womack/From his Friend/J. C. Colman./Sept 5. 64." on the lid escutcheon. Also includes a note reading "THE PROPERTY OF E.F. WOMACK/PRESENTED TO HIS FATHER/CAPT. GEORGE WASHINGTON/WOMACK of LOUISVILLE, KEN-/TUCKY SEPT 5TH 1864/BY HIS FRIEND J.C. COLEMAN" written on the back of a piece of cardstock with a 1923 date among the information on the opposite side. Captain George Washington Womack (1826-1901) was the Provost-Marshall of the 5th District based in Louisville, Kentucky, and was briefly held prisoner in his home near Louisville by Confederate guerrillas on July 27, 1864, and forced to promise to protect Confederate sympathizers within his district. J.C. Colman is listed in Civil War era records as the coroner of Franklin County, Kentucky, which includes the state capital. This "triple action/Export Model" Tranter revolver has a separate trigger for cocking the action but can also be fired in traditional single action. Most Tranter revolvers did not have hammer spurs and could not be fired in single action, and estimates are that as few as 50 of these "Export Model" revolvers were manufactured and that they were made for the American market. It features scroll engraving, a dovetailed post front sight, integral notch rear sight, "W. TRANTER'S/PATENT" marked loading lever, "HH" and "W. TRANTER'S/PATENT" on the left side of the frame near the loading lever screw, "No. 18908 T" on the right side of the frame, Birmingham proofs, and a one-piece checkered walnut grip. The case layout and accessories with this revolver match other known cased sets from the Civil War era. It contains the revolver, Tranter lubricant tin, Tranter bullet tin, Eley cap tin, a Sheffield cap tin, a small powder flask, rosewood handled screwdrivers and wrench, a Tranter patent marked bullet mold also marked "08" (the last two digits of the revolver's serial number), a bore rod, an oiler, and spare nipples.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 25% original blue finish on the barrel, gray and brown patina and mild oxidation on the balance, generally crisp engraving and markings, and mild overall wear. The grip is very good and has crisp checkering and minor handling and storage wear. Mechanically fine. The case and accessories are fine with mild storage wear including some oxidation. The inscription is distinct. This is a scarce revolver in it own right, and the presentation inscription relating to the border state of Kentucky during the Civil War certainly adds to it historical interest.
