Description:

Henry G. Newcomb (1811-1877) was born in New York and became a gunmaker, gunsmith, and retailer in Natchez, Mississippi, starting around 1845. The rifle has low profile blade and notch sights, "H.G. NEWCOMB NATCHEZ. CAST STEEL" on top between the rear sight and breech, a hole for an absent peep sight on the upper tang, "H.G. NEWCOMB/NATCHEZ" on the lock, double set triggers, a spurred trigger guard, scroll engraving, and a checkered wrist on the nicely figure stock which has German silver wedge plates, forend cap, and star on the cheek rest. Includes a replacement ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Very good with dark brown patina, mild oxidation, coat of protective varnish, one old replacement upper tang screw, and moderate overall wear. The stock is also very good and has smoothed checkering, nice figure, and scattered minor scrapes and pressure marks. Mechanically fine.
