Description:

This attractive fowling piece was manufactured c. 1813-1821. The lock is marked "T./KETLAND/& Co" at center and has a simple line border and a floral motif at the tail. Thomas Ketland Sr. was active in the gun trade from 1760 until his death in 1816, and the firm closed in 1821. The Birmingham proofs were introduced in 1813. The barrel has a silver blade front sight set back 5 1/2 inches from the muzzle, "LONDON" on top of the flat at the breech, floral patterns that coordinate with the lock engraved at the breech, and Birmingham proofs and a "tombstone" shaped maker's mark on the left at the breech. The silver thumb plate is inscribed "JH," and the furniture has some simple engraving. The stock has nice molding along the forend, raised and textured carving at the front of the side panels, more spade shaped raised and textured carving at the rear ramrod pipe and the barrel tang, textured recessed rectangles at the sides of the barrel tang, and a very nicely shaped and fluted "Roman nose" butt profile.

Rating Definition:

very good with a dark brown blend of applied finish, patina, and oxidation on the barrel and lock; aged patinas on the silver and brass, repaired trigger guard tang, and mild overall wear. The stock is also fine and has mostly distinct carving aside from at the ramrod pipe were it is slightly smoothed, white speckling along the butt, faint hairline crack at the nose of the lock, mild edge wear, and scattered minor dents and scratches. Mechanically fine.
