Description:

With browned twist barrels, the right tube smooth bored and of 14 bore, the left tube rifled with two grooves and of 40 bore. Broad raised file cut rib approx. 1 inch wide, cut with a groove along each outside edge, signed “JOSEPH BOURNE, MAKER LONDON No. 3394” towards the breech end, fitted with blued rear sight of one standing and six folding leaves each with platinum inlaid center line, blade front sight with blued base, and with the main part of the rib numbered in 1 inch increments from “1” to “20”. With detachable blued ladder sight with platinum center line which fits in the grooves along the sides of rib. Casehardened scroll engraved patent breeches each with platinum plug. The barrels and breeches struck with London proof marks. Casehardened border and scroll engraved standing breech and side locks, the latter each signed “BOURNE”. Engraved furniture including blued trigger plate and trigger guard, and large hinged patch box cover engraved with a running deer. Figured straight hand half stock with checkered grip and forearm, the underside of the butt with blank white metal initial escutcheon and blued sling eye, the corresponding sling eye is on the central ramrod pipe. Iron and brass mounted ramrod, the iron head threaded for an attachment. In original mahogany fitted case lined in red baize, with accessories including iron ball mold, leather shot flask and Sykes Extra Quality powder flask, sealed paper wrapped tin of Joyce percussion caps, and large Hawksley oiler.

Rating Definition:

Barrels retaining 98% older rebrowned finish, signatures and rib graduations clear, a small patch of light corrosion spotting visible at the breech end of the shot barrel. Breeches retaining 50% faded original casehardened finish. Standing breech and locks each with crisp engraving and retaining 60% original faded casehardened finish. Trigger plate and trigger guard retaining 80% original blued finish, crisp engraving. The butt plate retaining 20% original blued finish. Patch box cover discoloured to the outside, the inside with near 100% original casehardened finish. Stock with sharp checkering, scattered minor handling marks. Case in good condition with external storage marks, lining faded, accessories generally good. A fine example of the classic British “cape rifle” retaining its extremely rare detachable ladder rear sight. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
