This late World War II production B.S.A. No. 4 rifle was converted to No. 4 Mk. I (T) sniper rifle configuration by Holland & Holland c. 1945. The rifle is fitted with a No. 32 MK 3, 3X telescopic sight with post and cross-wire reticle on a detachable, cast iron mount. The buttstock has the distinctive hardwood cheek piece. The rifle has the modified backsight fitted to all No. 4 Mk. I (T) sniper rifles and the target sling swivel just ahead of the magazine fitted to rifles following World War II. The rifle is complete with russet leather lens caps with British Broad Arrow markings, a No. 8 Mk. 1 steel scope can with leather strap and wooden No. 15 Mk. I transit case. The rifle receiver has a black phosphate finish with bright bolt and blue-black magazine, barrel, forearm cap and upper barrel band. The stock, forearm and handguards are oil finished North American walnut. The rear handguard is the late pattern without grip serrations. The cheekpiece is varnished hardwood. The scope has a dull blue finish, and the mount and rings have a black phosphate finish. The left side of the buttstock socket is stamped: "M47C/1945/V38808/TR" in four lines. The left side of the receiver is stamped with a "T" that indicates the rifle was converted to sniper configuration. An "S" stamped on the right side of the receiver near the breech indicates the rifle had the backsight zeroed after conversion. A small Enfield on-site examiner's mark is stamped on the left side of the receiver near the bolt slot. The underside of the stock is stamped with the "S51" Holland & Holland conversion mark. The scope serial number "24420" is stamped on the upper stock wrist immediately behind the receiver. The rifle serial number, "V38808", is stamped on the rear face of the bolt handle, underside of the forearm below the upper barrel band and on the left side of the scope mount. All of the rifle and telescopic sight serial numbers match, and the rifle has all of the correct sniper inspection marks. The telescopic sight was manufactured by Taylor Hobson & Co and is roll-stamped: "TEL STG. No 32 Mk 3/)S 2039A/No. 24420" in three lines. Blue "B" bloomed and red "W" water-proof marks are painted on the sides on the scope tube. The scope rings and mounts are stamped with matching "382" and "383" assembly numbers. The scope can lid is painted with "RIFLE Q9588" on the cover. An Ordnance label glued to the inside of the can is marked with the serial number of this rifle "V38808" and the scope number "24420" indicating the can had been re-numbered to this rifle. The serial number "39588" is stamped on the left side of the scope mount and lined out which probably indicates that this late production rifle utilized a scope can and mount salvaged from an earlier, unserviceable rifle. The transit case has the original dark green paint with white markings and has the inventory list glued to inside of the lid. The No. 4 Mk. I (T) is generally acknowledged to be the best sniper rifle issued during World War II.

Excellent. This rifle is all original and remains in nearly mint, as issued condition. The rifle has 98% plus original finish. The stock, forearm and handguards are in near new condition with only slight storage marks. The scope shows slightly more wear than the rifle but retains 90% of the original finish with finish loss from the lens covers at either end of the tube. All of the markings on the rifle, telescopic sight and mount are correct and crisp. The scope optics are excellent. The elevation knob turns freely, but the windage knob is frozen. The scope can is very good overall and retains 75% of the painted finish. The transit case remains in fine overall condition. This is an excellent example of a key World War II sniper rifle.
