Description:

Introduced in 1938, a number of CZ 38 pistols were appropriated by the Germans as sidearms under the designation "P.39(t)". This pistol has two features that set it out from the bulk of Nazi 38s. First, while the majority of Nazi 38s (approximately 44,000) were pre-invasion production diverted from stocks destined for Czech cavalry and aviators, this shows signs of being a much scarcer post-invasion production (approximately 1,000 made). Second, in lieu of the traditional "double action only" mechanism, it is fitted with a single/double style action more in the style of a P.38. Neither the German or Czechoslovakian governments are noted as ordering this action style, with either the Romanians or Bulgarians wanting this style (and they wanted it with a manual safety, which is not seen here). Fixed sights, with the one line Prague address on the left side of the slide, "WaA76" proofs on the barrel and left side of the frame, "eagle/swastika" proofed barrel and "CZ" marked grips. A texture has been applied to the front sight, and the traditionally smooth ring hammer has been serrated. On the bottom of page 62 of "Axis Pistols" by Jan Still, he notes that "a very few late war assembled pistols have a test proof on the barrel."

Rating Definition:

Fine, with 60% of the mixed finish, The barrel shows a strong blue finish in the areas protected by the slide, with a darker toned blue on the slide and side plate, and a mixed gray patina on most of the frame, with some light spotting and handling marks overall. Mild tool marks or peening are visible on and around the hammer pin. The grip is very good, with mild scuffs. Mechanically very good.
