Description:

This very fine, early WWII Luftwaffe M30 Drilling was manufactured by J.P. Sauer & Sohn circa 1941. The M30 Drillings were commercial guns acquired by the Luftwaffe for use as survival weapons for bomber aircrews assigned to the various theaters during WWII. They were possibly the highest quality firearm issued to any combatants during WWII. The barrels have a commercial grade blue finish, and a beautiful, vivid, case colored finish is on the receiver, trigger guard, forend attaching iron and grip cap. They are fitted with a European walnut, stock and forearm, with a small German style oval cheekpiece and a black plastic buttplate. The face of the buttplate has a "SS" Sauer & Sohn monogram. The barrels have a raised matted rib with a steel front sight with nickel-silver bead and a folding rifle rear sight which can be raised when the barrel selector is moved to the rifle barrel. The receiver, tang, trigger guard and buttcap are decorated with restrained and impeccably executed scroll engraving. The Sauer & Sohn intertwined "SS" monogram is engraved on the underside of the receiver. The receiver is serial numbered "338678", and it has a matching barrel set and forend. There is a Luftwaffe eagle engraved on the right rear shotgun barrel. The inside of the forearm is stamped with the partial serial number "8678". A Luftwaffe "Stick Eagle/2" acceptance mark is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The underside of the barrel lug area and right receiver rail have a "Eagle/N" commercial proof. There is also a faint but visible small, "Eagle/M" Navy proofmark indicating issuance to the Nazi Kriegsmarine. The shotgun gauge "12/65" is stamped on the underside of both shotgun barrels. "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL" with bullets on either end is stamped on the top of both shotgun barrels and on the left side of the rifle barrel. The legend "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL" is roll-stamped on the breech of both shotgun barrels and on both sides of the receiver. The drilling is complete with an original Luftwaffe aluminum blue/gray painted storage case. The case is divided into four compartments which includes the original three-section wooden cleaning rod, a brass jag, a bore brush and one bore mop.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 95% of the original blue finish on the barrels overall with edge and high spot wear with some very small spotting on the left rear barrel area. The action and forend components and grip cap retain 80% plus of their original case colors, with most of the finish loss on the forend attaching iron and takedown lever as well as the front curve of the trigger guard bow. The buttstock and forend are both in excellent condition and show just a couple of very minor handling marks, and have an old, extra protective coat of varnish or wood sealant, which has now darkened but protected the wood very well. The checkering on both the buttstock and forend are in excellent condition. The Luftwaffe Eagle cartouche is also in excellent condition. The metal storage case retains 75% plus of its original blue/gray Luftwaffe paint with visible distinct markings on the lid. The hinges and hasps all work, and the leather carrying handle is in fine condition and solid. A really super nice high condition Luftwaffe M30 Drilling.
