Description:

Per the included documentation (the formal certificate, photocopy of shinsa worksheet, envelope), this blade was inspected by the NTHK-NPO, which assigned it a score of 76 points and identified it as the work of Magoroku Kanemoto, a 2nd generation Kanemoto smith active 1504-1528. The overall length is 32 3/4 inches, with a 26 inch long live edge, showing attractive metal grain and a strong, broad hamon. The tang shows a very deep, well aged antique color and evidence of more than one round of shortening, with two solid mekugi-ana (the higher of the pair drilled more than once) and traces of a third mekugi-ana on a section near the base. This section, formerly part of the left side of the tang, was cut down, thinned out, folded over and inlaid into the right side of the tang to preserve the signature; this uncommon method of preserving the signature is clearly visible in the photograph attached to the NTHK-NPO certificate. The included furniture consists of a two-piece gold washed habaki, one copper seppa and a set of shirasaya mounts. Included with the lot is a purple cloth sword case.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall. A number of dings and mars are present on the spine, but the remainder of the blade is well preserved, with an attractive bright finish and strong hamon. The fittings show mild wear and tear. A thin cut is present through the paperwork envelope, affecting both the worksheet copy and the certificate, though the damage does not affect legibility.
