The original rifles were developed by the Beretta company in the late 1960s for the Italian Army. They were the equivalent to the M16A2 rifles, however they use a piston driven gas system and not the gas impingement system. With the interest in the Colt AR-15 rifles during the early 1970s, very few of these rifles were actually imported to the United States.
