Description:

This hand forged spontoon tomahawk has a 9 1/8 inch long head with folded tear drop eye, dot/circular accents, filework at the edges, and inward curved hooks. The 22 1/2 inch shaft has a large number of mostly iron tacks at the top and a few nails. A similar tomahawk listed in the Smithsonian Institution collection is in figure 53 and discussed on page 92 of "American Indian Tomahawks." It is estimated to be from 1830-1850.

Rating Definition:

Good with chipped point, dark patina and mild oxidation, and moderate wear on the head; gray and brown patina on the tacks, and some cracks and mild wear on the shaft.
