Description:

The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 4 1/2 inch barrel in .38 caliber, blue finish, type of stocks not listed, and "PROPERTY OF/THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK/BUTTE MONT." engraved on the frame when sold to J.E. Davis of Butte, Montana and shipped to Missoula, Mercantile Co. of Missoula, Montana, on January 11, 1908. This shipment was for 10 guns. Both grip panels are numbered to a different gun. As called out in the factory letter, the First National Bank property marking is on the side plate, otherwise standard Colt markings. The First National Bank was founded by the purported first Montana millionaire, Andrew Jackson Davis, and politician and 7th Governor of the Montana Territory, Samuel T. Hauser, in 1877. At the time of Davis' death in 1890, a nephew to the millionaire took over operations. J.E. Davis was a director of the bank (see the 1906 edition of "Rand McNally International Bankers Directory") and was presumable a descendent of Andrew Jackson Davis.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retaining 90% original blue finish with thinning to brown and high edge wear on the balance. The grips are fine with high edge wear, some minor handling marks and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. An interesting factory marked Montana bank Colt New Army Revolver. Colt factory inscribed revolvers are rarely encountered.
