Description:

This beautiful pair is documented in "Remington Rolling Block Pistols" by Landskron. On page 248, he indicates they were in the James R. Somers collection and describes them as marked with serial numbers 9 and 10 and "elegantly engraved in the 'Nimschke style.' The serial numbers are found on both the grip straps and under the barrel. . .The frames are gold washed; the barrels trigger guards, breechblocks and hammers are silver plated. The casing is of wood with a book-type leather covering. The lining is brown crushed velour which contrasts well with the multi-colored pistols." He also indicates these pistols were professionally refinished prior to November 1973 when they were advertised in the "Arms Gazette." The engraving consists mainly of dense intertwining scrolls on the frames along with floral blooms on the left sides of the frames and additional scrolls and border designs on the barrels. They have standard fixed blade and notch sights, "REMINGTON'S ILION, N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3D NOV 15TH 1864 APRIL 17TH 1866" on the top of the barrels, and the serial and assembly numbers on the left side of the grip straps ("9" and "3652" on "A" and "10" and "3054" on "B"). The serial numbers are also repeated on the barrels, front of the frames, forearms, and grips. The latter components are solid antique ivory. The case is as described above and contains 30 cartridges. This outstanding set is in keeping with a select few other sets of deluxe, exhibition grade Remington Rolling Block Pistol sets, including the famous "Gold Dust Twins" formerly in the collection of Karl Moldenhauer sold by RIAC earlier in 2020 which also featured engraving attributed to legendary 19th century Master Engraver L.D. Nimschke.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 85% plus replated gold and silver plating displaying natural aged patina and minor storage wear. The forearm and grip have attractive natural tones and grain, thin age cracks including "spider-webbing" on the butt, and minor age and storage wear. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good and has mild wear mainly on the exterior.
