Description:

The Long Range Rifles were manufactured in four main variations, and only 429 were manufactured in total compared to 6,001 of the Model 1874 Sporting Rifles. Of those, Sharps expert Frank Sellers estimated 70 were manufactured as No. 1s at the Bridgeport factory. Based on the 32 inch part octagon barrel and steel buttplate, this rifle was likely been manufactured between December 1876 when the switch was made from 34 inch octagon to 32 inch part octagon and June 1878 when the part octagon barrels became standard in 34 inches. This rifle will letter as a No. 1 sold to William J. Land of Atlanta, Georgia, on August 3, 1877, in .45-2 4/10 with a 32 inch barrel and weight of 9 lbs. 14 oz. On October 15th of the same year he wrote to Sharps praising his new Sharps rifles and noting that they were far superior to Remington's rifles and were the best in the world. Professor Land rose from humble means to wealth and was reportedly one of the finest analytical chemists in Georgia before his career was cut short when he completed suicide in 1882. Matching serial numbers are written inside the forearm (partial) and stamped on the bottom of the barrel, the upper tang, and the left side of one of the rear sight bases. The barrel has a windgauge globe front sight with spirit level, the "Old Reliable" marking, and the Bridgeport address. The single trigger has a knurled face. The upper tang has a Vernier peep sight, and a second sight base is fitted to the butt. It is mounted with deluxe wood with checkering on the forend and wrist, a silver grip cap inscribed with a monogram consisting of the letters "CWC," and checkered steel buttplate (usually found on rifles from November 1875 to September 1876).

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% plus professionally refinished blue on the barrel, 60% original case colors, minor spotting, and small scratches and marks. The wood is also very fine and has smooth glossy finish, attractive figure, crisp checkering, and a few minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. This is a very attractive and scarce Sharps rifle. These Long Range rifles were used in by marksmen during the heyday of single shot rifle competition and are highly prized by collectors.
