Description:

All Model 1853 shotguns are scarce and desirable as only 320 were manufactured between July 1854 and December 1856 in a variety of variations. 281 were 26 gauge guns finished plain like this one, and among these "standard" guns there were variations such as brass or iron furniture. This one falls within the third of the four production groups (16,900s) noted by Frank Sellers in "Sharps Firearms" and has a bright bead/post front sight, "SHARP'S RIFLE/MANUFG CO/HARTFORD CONN." on the breech, the matching serial number on the bottom of the barrel, a pewter cap on the smooth forearm which has the matching number inside and on the back, grooved receiver ring for a rear sight, "SHARP'S/PATENT/1852" on the lock, "SHARP'S/PATENT/1848" ahead of the serial number on the upper tang, and a smooth buttstock with brass buttplate and lock screw washer.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The gun appears to have been scarcely if ever used and well maintained and has 40% of the original brown and mottled casehardened finishes remaining, smooth patina on the balance, crisp markings, and minimal wear. Aside from a chip at the toe, the wood is also fine and has smooth refreshed oiled finish, general dents and scratches, and minor wear. Mechanically fine.
