Description:

The Model 1842 pistols were both the first percussion U.S. martial handguns and the second to last U.S. martial single shot pistols. They were used in the Mexican-American War through the Civil War and many continued to be used as surplus arms by settlers, Native Americans, and others well-after the military had replaced them with revolvers. The first pistol is dated "1847" on the lock and has the standard markings and features. The holsters are brown leather and have a solid cross strap as well as a belt.

Rating Definition:

Good with gray and brown patina, some oil staining, patches of oxidation and light pitting, mostly distinct markings, faint barrel date, small tension crack at the rear lock screw, light scrapes and dings, and some chips/flakes in the wood. Mechanically fine. The holster set is also good with the covers and some other components absent, generally solid leather with some crackling, and attractive varied brown tones.

The lock and barrel tang are dated "1853," and it has standard markings and features.

Rating Definition:

Good with dark brown patina on the barrel and hammer, lighter gray patina on the lock, aged patina on the brass, mild oxidation and pitting, a crack through the wrist, "X" and "JWA" carved on the left stock flat, and numerous dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
