Description:

An estimated 5,804 to 6,703 Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoons were manufactured c. 1848-1859. These musketoons were used by the Army in conflicts with Native Americans in the 1850s and during the Civil War. Unlike the Model 1842 muskets which were widely rifled, only a small number of the musketoons were rifled and fitted with three-leaf rear sights like this one. This musketoon is also the variant with a sleeved chain device rather than swivel mount for the ramrod and is dated "1853" on the barrel tang and "1854" on the tail of the lock. The barrel and lock have standard markings. The stock has "V" on the left side of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Good with bright lock and barrel with minor pitting and oxidation, dark aged patina on the brass furniture, moderate dings and dents on the buttplate, cracks in the butt of the refinished stock along with a few dents and filler material inside the buttstock. Mechanically excellent.
