The maker’s records confirm that this rifle was ordered on October 8, 1883 by Capt. Stewart. The rifle is accompanied by the original bill of sale made out to A. Stewart Esq. dated August 1886. With blacked barrels with raised partially matted rib, bead front sight and rear sight of one standing and one folding leaf each with platinum inlaid center line and respectively graduated “50” and “200” yards, doll’s head extension, and respectively signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON.” and “WINNERS OF THE “FIELD” RIFLE TRIALS. LONDON. 1883”. Casehardened action with carved percussion fences and engraved “CHARGE 4 1/2 DRAMS CASE 3 INCHES”, and rebounding back action locks each signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND”. Double line border engraving throughout. Figured semi-pistol grip stock with checkered grip and forearm, dark horn pistol grip cap carved as a shell. The top of the wrist with applied iron strengthening plate. Action and barrels with Birmingham black powder proof marks. With brass cornered oiled canvas and leather case, almost certainly original, with accessories and Holland & Holland printed trade labels to the lid. A copy of the Holland & Holland records and factory letter also accompanies this Lot.

Barrels retaining 85% older reblacked finish, signatures clear, some scattered patches of pitting from where its been lying in the case. Action and locks with 30% faded original casehardened finish. Stock with bolted on strengthening plate to top of wrist and part of the escutcheon supporting the forend pin is missing. Case a little worn. Recent canvas outer.
