Description:

Manufactured in circa 1855 as a percussion gun and subsequently converted to a breech loader in the 1860s. With browned damascus three-stage barrel with turned girdle and signed “GEORGE GIBBS. BRISTOL”, the breech section octagonal then polygonal, and with bead front sight. Action with faceted breech and deep shaped fence. Casehardened border engraved side lock. Well figured walnut straight hand stock with checkered grip and forearm, and horn forearm cap.

Rating Definition:

Barrel retaining nearly all of the rebrowned finish, maker’s signature worn. Action discolored, mid-grey patina, retaining perhaps 10% original casehardened finish – faded on surfaces and strong in sheltered areas, clear border engraved lines. Lock retaining 90% casehardened finish, possibly renewed at time of conversion. Stock with wood extension with matched grain, numerous minor handling marks, well defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
