Crolle Damascus steel barrels with a single bead sight on the smooth concave rib marked "JAMES MACNAUGHTON. 26 HANOVER STREET. EDINBURGH", chambers measured at 2 1/2 inches, single extractor, and standard London proofs from the 1875 to 1887 period on the flats. The casehardened bar-in-wood, July 12, 1879 MacNaughton patent lever cocking action features a crystal view window, treble grip action body, automatic toggle safety, and dual triggers. The water table has standard London proofs and is marked "THE EDINBURGH/No. 71/MACNAUGHTON PATENT". The action is fully engraved with twisting cable borders, fine scroll, and "MACNAUGHTON EDINBURGH" in a scrolled banner across the tops of the fences. Attractively figured checkered splinter forearm with horn tip insert and straight grip stock with engraved fittings, gold initial oval, and checkered horn buttplate. Incudes a leather bound takedown case and brass "SHEFFIELD" marked powder flask. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech proofed at "12" (.729) and measured at .739/.738; choke constriction .006/.022 (improved cylinder/modified); minimum wall thickness .028/.027; drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/8 inches; length of pull 14 1/4 inches; weight 6 lbs. 10 oz.

Very fine. The barrels have 85% thinning restored brown finish, well defined, visible Damascus pattern, crisp rib marking, some light edge wear, and some very light pitting on the underside of the barrels. The action has approximately 70% thinning original case colors in the protected areas and the remainder an overall dove gray patina with Best Quality, detailed engraving, and intact view window. The restored wood is also very fine with attractive figure, sharp recut checkering, and some scattered small dings, and a thin crack ahead of the trigger plate. Mechanically excellent. Case is poor with scuffs and scrapes throughout the exterior, staining and tears in the interior lining, and separated dovetail joints at the rear of the lid portion.
