Blue steel dovetail lump barrels with chambers proved and measured at 2 1/2 inches, automatic ejectors, single bead sight on the smooth concave rib, and London (1925-1954) proofs on the flats. The barrels are marked "HARRISON & HUSSEY Ltd./41 ALBEMABLE STREET. LONDON. W." and feature light scroll engraving at the breech end of the rib. Casehardened side lock action with finely checkered dual triggers, gold lined cocking indicators, and automatic sliding safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" marking. The action and locks feature full coverage floral bouquet and scroll engraving with Harrison & Hussey banners on each lock and underside of the action. Finely checkered walnut straight grip stock and forearm with Anson latch, engraved fittings, blank initial oval, and checkered bare butt. Included is a sterling silver trophy cup with lid. The cup is inscribed "AIKEN GUN CLUB/AIKEN S.C./FEBRUARY 5. 1913/HOMESTEAD CUP/50 BIRDS/Won By/E.M. BYERS". Ebenezer M. Byers (1880-1932) of Pittsburg, PA was a wealthy American socialite, athlete, industrialist, and competitive trap shooter as well as the 1906 U.S. Amateur Golf Champion. Byers's perhaps most lasting legacy was his 1931 "testimony" to the Federal Trade Commission on the effects of unregulated radioactive therapy or as it's now called "radioactive quackery". After a 1927 shoulder injury he was prescribed the patent medicine Radithor, a solution of water and radium. By 1930 after consuming an estimated 1,400 doses he stopped using the solution and in 1931 was asked by the FTC to testify to its effects. The lawyers stated that Byers's "Whole upper jaw, excepting two front teeth, and most of his lower jaw had been removed", and that "All the remaining bone tissue of his body was disintegrating, and holes were actually forming in his skull." His death on March 31, 1932 was attributed to radiation poisoning, but was later deemed to have been caused by multiple cancers. He was buried in a lead lined coffin, and some 30 plus years later his remains were exhumed and found to still be dangerously radioactive. Also included is a leather bound takedown case with Harrison & Hussey interior label, "E.M. BYERS/PITTSBURG." brand on the lid exterior, two-piece wood cleaning rod, two sets of snap caps, and two horn handled London pattern turnscrews. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech proved at 13/1 (.719) and measured at .733/.734; choke constriction .005/.021 (improved cylinder/modified); minimum wall thickness .025/.026; drop at comb 1 3/8 inches; drop at heel 2 3/8 inches; length of pull 14 inches; cast off.

Rating Definition:

Very fine as professionally refurbished with 95% of the blue finish remaining on the barrels, some traces of mild edge wear, and traces of light spotting. The action has 80% original case colors with some small tool marks on the screw heads, crisp engraving, and some light silvering on the high edges. The wood is fine with freshened checkering, scattered small dings, a slight crack behind the right side plate, and initial oval slightly proud to the wood. Mechanically excellent. Case is fair with non-functioning latch, scuffs and scrapes throughout, and interior staining. Trophy is fine with clear inscription and overall mottled patina.
