The accompanying 1978 dated factory letter, which is addressed to noted Colt expert and author Albert E. Brichaux, lists this pistol with a 5 inch barrel in .45 caliber, nickel finish, type of stocks not listed, and type "C" engraving by Colt Master Engraver Alvin A. White when shipped to Thompson Sporting Goods of Long Beach, California, on August 17, 1966. White has signed his work on the right side of the grip frame under the grip: “A.A.W.” The type "C" engraving consists of well executed punch dot backed scrollwork on nearly all surfaces. The Colt markings on the left side of the slide and the serial number on the right side of the frame are inside a banner. The grips feature silver Rampant Colt medallions. Alvin Alexander White was considered the "dean of American arms engravers" and is among the greatest American arms engravers of all time. He engraved guns while serving as an air corpsman in World War II, and worked as a master engraver for Colt following the war. He engraved fine arms for a variety of world leaders and other wealthy individuals both in the U.S. and abroad. His work has been shown in many publications and is contained in some of the world's finest public and private collections of fine arms.
