Description:

These pistols were produced during WWI in an attempt to supply the U.S. Army with sufficient pistols until the Colt company got into full production. A approximately 21,676 pistols were made and the serial number of this example put this into the very end of the production series. These pistols were nicely made and functioned correctly as long as the parts remained together as the company never achieved much success with the Government's requirement of interchangeability of parts. Consequently after they completed this single contract, they never produced any more M1911 pistols for the Government. During the post war years most pistols and parts were culled from inventory as they could not be used on Colt or other manufactures pistols. It has the later model slide which is marked on the left side, in three-line; "PATENTED DEC. 19. 1905, over FEB. 14. 1911. AUG 19., 1913./COLTS PT. F.A. MFG. CO.", the circled "REMINGTON over UMC" in the middle and "MANUFACTURED BY, over REMINGTON ARMS UMC CO. INC./BRIDGEPORT, CONN. U.S.A.". The right side of the slide is marked in two lines; "MODEL OF 1911 / U.S. ARMY CALIBER 45". The rear of the slide is marked with an "Eagle Head over I38" above the firing pin hole. The left side of the frame is marked with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" towards the front end and the "E.E.C." of the U.S. Ordnance inspector Major Edmund E. Chapman, with a single "eagle head/E26" proof by the magazine catch release button. The right side of the frame is marked with the serial and a single number "8" inspector's number on the front portion of the trigger guard bow. The barrel is the correct blued version that has the single "P" proof on top of the chamber area. It has the early 1911 style checkered slide stop and narrow checkered thumb safety, short grip safety, flat mainspring housing with the lanyard loop and a single "E" proof on the bottom. The hammer is also the early wide Colt pattern with the fine checkering on the spur. The grips are the early walnut diamond checkered patterns and it is complete with three blued half-tone magazine with the pinned on base.

Rating Definition:

Excellent overall with 95% of the original blued finish remaining with scattered surface blemishes, high spot wear thinning of the finish in the front grip strap. The grips are excellent overall with nice sharp diamonds. A very nice example of a WWI Remington-UMC M1911 semi-automatic pistol.
