Description:

The included March 7, 2018 notarized statement from Albanus Phillips Jr. states that this Inland M1 Carbine was presented as a gift from Rear Admiral Richard Byrd to the Phillips family. Byrd of course is most famous for his 1926 flight to the North Pole, 1927 Trans-Atlantic flight, and 1928 Antarctic expedition. For his many achievements in the exploration of the poles, and flight milestones Byrd was awarded the Tiffany Cross (Medal of Honor), Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Gold Medal of the American Geographical Society. His service in WWII resulted in yet more awards including the Order of Christopher Columbus from the government of the Dominican Republic, and twice being awarded the Legion of Merit. Byrd was present at the September 2, 1945 Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. Less well known is the Phillips Packing Company of Maryland. The Phillips Company was an East Coast canning company that at the time was the largest fruit cannery in the country. The cannery not only supplied provisions for the various Byrd expeditions (Col. Albanus Phillips being a personal friend of Byrd) they were also the largest supplier of C-Rations to the U.S. military during WWII. Standard blade front and stamped adjustable rear peep sights, Inland barrel dated "12-43", standard markings on the receiver ring, flat top blue bolt, milled trigger group, unmarked push button safety, unmarked magazine catch, and standard markings on the receiver heel. Early style high wood Saginaw replacement stock and two rivet forearm with "crossed cannons" stamp over a boxed "SG" cartouche, oval cut oiler slot, and stamped checkered buttplate. The end of the grip has been roughly carved "TP" for Theodore Phillips an executive with the Phillips Packing Company. Includes oiler, canvas web sling, "1943" dated canvas double magazine pouch, and one extra magazine.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 90% plus original dark parkerized finish remaining, some scattered surface scratches, mild cycling marks on the receiver rails and bolt body, and traces of light edge wear. The replacement wood is fine with scattered small dings and bruises, rougher patch at the rear right of the handguard, and sharp stock cartouche. The magazine does show some wear and light pitting. Mechanically excellent.
