Description:

Manufactured at Mauser's Borsigwalde facility in 1937, this rifle is fitted with a rare experimental "fiberglass" stock. During the early stages of the preparation and execution of World War II, the Wehrmacht explored a number of alternatives for conventional dried and turned hardwood gunstocks, hoping to find something faster, cheaper, and more tolerant to shifting of temperature and humidity. In the end, laminated wood was found to check all the boxes, and would become the de-facto standard for the 98k through the bulk of the war. As such, fiber resin stocks were made in very limited quantity, with only a few hundred made for evaluation and field testing, and even fewer making it to the States in good order. Blade front and tangent rear sights, with "S/243/1937" on the receiver ring with "droop wing eagle" and "eagle/211" proofs, "MOD.98" in block letters on the side wall, and matching numbers overall, including on the stock and the underside of the upper handguard. The stock itself is of multi-piece construction, with a seam between the forearm and buttstock just ahead of the receiver ring, and an additional piece serving as the mounting point for the buttplate. The coloration is a red/brown maroon color, with notable patterns of layered, impregnated cloth, with a traditional reinforcing bolt and bolt disassembly washer, an aluminum sleeve added to the stock slot to increase durability, Heer-pattern German Army proofing visible on the right side, matching number on the belly and a flat steel buttplate. Included with the rifle is a blued steel muzzle protector, which has a stamped matching number on the rear.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 90% of the professionally restored blue finish, showing bright edge wear, minor spotting and light handling marks. The excellent stock shows a few scratches and scuffs, and is generally solid overall with fine detail in the proofs. Mechanically excellent.
