This extremely rare prototype was developed in the early 1900s for a single shot pistol based on the action of the widely popular Model 1900/1902 rifles. It is believed that less that 100 were manufactured. These prototype pistols and a rumored very limited number of production examples are discussed by Madis on page 572 of "The Winchester Book", with a design drawing on page 574 showing the frame of this particular pistol. The pistol shows no markings but there is a tag attached to the trigger guard that bears George Madis' signature and "No. 2". Includes a letter from George Madis which describes this pistol and other similar pistols in this auction as factory prototypes. It is quite possible that many of these prototypes were retained by Winchester employees.

Excellent, retains 95% original blue finish with some light edge/high spot wear and some light handling marks scattered throughout. The grips are very fine with some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
