Description:

This pistol is one of less than an estimated 100 prototype pistols based on the Model 1900/1902 rifle action and manufactured during the early 1900s as Winchester explored the idea of making a single shot pistol based on the actions of these popular rifles. The only the markings are a Winchester oval proof on the bolt and initials "L.M." engraved on the silver plaque on the grip. Blade front and two-leaf rear sights. There is a tag attached to the trigger guard signed by George Madis and marked "No. 1". Also included is a copy of a letter from Madis where he states that he believes this pistol and other similar examples in this auction to be factory prototypes. It is quite possible that some of these prototypes were retained by Winchester employees.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall, retains 95% original blue finish and 98% original nickel finish with some patches of the light pitting near the muzzle, some light frosting on the nickel, light handling marks scattered throughout, and showing some of the general imperfections of an employee made gun. The very fine grips have some light handling marks throughout and an attractive antique patina on the plaque. Mechanically excellent.
