Description:

The 1st Model Burgess rifles manufactured by Whitney in the late 1870s were revolutionary as the first repeating firearms manufactured for the popular .45-70 Government cartridges. This rifle is an early 1st Model and has the two-digit serial number "37" marked on the bottom of the breechblock and on the left side of the tangs. It has a dovetailed brass blade front sight, standard sporting rear sight, "G.W. MORSE/PATENTED OCT. 28TH 1856" and "45 CAL. 70 GR. C.F." on top of the barrel, reinforcing screws and dual gas ports on the breech block, "A. BURGESS/PATENTED JANY. 7TH 1873/PATENTED OCT. 19TH 1875." on the upper tang, a smooth stock and forearm, and no cleaning rod compartment. The latter is a feature generally only found on the very early Burgess-Morse rifles.

Rating Definition:

Very good with 30% original blue finish, gray and brown patina on the balance, minor oxidation, patches of mild pitting, and general mild scratches and marks. The wood is very good and has general mild dings and scratches. Mechanically fine. This is the earliest Whitney lever action rifle we have had the pleasure of cataloging and would be an excellent addition to any antique American or lever action arms collection.
