Description:

This rifle was manufactured c. 1883 based on the "F" serial number prefix and features special order checkering and a figured buttstock. The survey data reported on page 221 of "Lever Action Magazine Rifles Derived from the Patents of Andrew Burgess" by Maxwell lists only one special order rifle in this caliber with a casehardened frame. All special order Whitney-Kennedy rifles are rare. Unlike Winchester, Sharps, and other rifle makers, Whitney actually discouraged special orders. The rifle has a nickel-silver "Rocky Mountain" blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, standard barrel and patent markings, and cleaning rods in the stock compartment. The lever is numbered "G/434" and appears to be an old replacement.

Rating Definition:

Very good with traces of original blue and casehardened finish, mostly brown patina, light oxidation, and general mild wear. The wood has some moderate scrapes and dings, wear on the checkering mainly on the forearm, some discoloration at the heel and toe, a minor crack on the front of the forearm on the right. Mechanically fine.
