Description:

This rifle was manufactured c. 1883 based on the "F" serial number prefix and features multiple special order features: a nickel plated frame and buttplate, sling swivels, and checkered stock and forearm. The features are listed in Olson's spreadsheet at EliWhitney.org. All special order Whitney-Kennedy rifles are rare. Unlike Winchester, Sharps, and other rifle makers, Whitney actually discouraged special orders. The survey data reported on page 221 of "Lever Action Magazine Rifles Derived from the Patents of Andrew Burgess" by Maxwell, for example, lists only 58 special order rifles in .45-60, only 10 of those with nickel plating, out of 751 special order rifles recorded. The rifle also has a nickel-silver "Rocky Mountain" blade front sight, adjustable sporting rear sight, standard barrel and patent markings, matching serial numbers on the lever and lower tang, and sling swivels on the forearm cap and buttstock.

Rating Definition:

Good with traces of original blue finish, dark patina, and moderate pitting and oxidation on the barrel, magazine, and forearm cap; 70% period replated nickel and lighter pitting on the other components; and the wood has general dents and scrapes, some minor cracks, small chips at the corners, extra hole for the lower sling swivel, and moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine.
