Description:

This is a solid example of a Colt Third Model Dragoon revolver that was manufactured in 1851. Production of Third Dragoon revolvers commenced at approximately serial number 10700; this is an early example of a Third Dragoon revolver that may have been part of the Ordnance contract for 2,000 revolvers issued on May 8, 1851. The 7 1/2 inch half-round barrel has a nickel-silver front sight blade and is roll-stamped: "{ ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY}" in one line facing the cylinder. The revolver has the oval trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops that are characteristic of Third Model Dragoon revolvers. The trigger guard and back strap are brass and the one-piece grip is walnut. The left side of the frame is stamped with "COLTS/PATENT/US" in three lines. Single "B" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on the loading lever, frame, back strap and trigger guard. The serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "1414" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver shows moderate wear and has a dark silver-gray patina with scattered age discoloration and light pitting. The wedge screw is a replacement. The Ranger and Indian fight scene is lightly visible on the cylinder. The trigger guard and back strap have been polished in the past and have spots of age discoloration with scattered light scratches. The period initials "WN" are lightly scratched on the butt. The slightly undersized reoiled grip is in good condition with small chip on the front edge of each heel and rounded butt edges. The action is slightly loose but functions fine otherwise. This is a solid example of a desirable U.S. contract Colt Third Model Dragoon revolver.
