Description:

This carbine was reportedly was brought to Fort Benton, Montana, in 1850 or 1851 by a man known as Clemont and came out of the region. 10,500 of these "side lever" Hall carbines were manufactured by Simeon North in 1844-1853. The 1st and 2nd U.S. Dragoons were among the units issued these carbines during the Mexican-American War, and more than half are believed to have been rifled for use in the Civil War, making original smoothbore examples like this scarce. Its western heritage certainly adds to its interest. It has the standard sights and markings including the "STEEL" marking behind the marking used starting in 1848. A "W" is carved into the right side of the butt.

Rating Definition:

Good. The metal has mottled gray and brown patina and mild pitting, legible markings, and moderate overall wear. The hammer spur is broken. The stock has traces of the cartouches, a few chips, and moderate scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
