Description:

Manufactured in 1889. The accompanying factory letter identifies this rare SAA as a flattop target model with a 7 1/2 inch barrel in .22 caliber, nickel finish, and hard rubber grips when shipped to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co. of Chicago, Illinois, on January 18, 1889. This was a three gun shipment. According to production totals complied by John E. Parson from Colt factory records, Colt only manufactured a grand total of 200 SAAs chambered in .22 Rimfire and out of the 200 only 93 were in flattop target configuration (see Wilson's "Book of Colt Firearms" on page 252). The barrel has the one-line Hartford address on top, and the left side of the frame has the three-line patent dates marking. "22 CAL" is marked on the left side of the trigger guard. Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard and back strap.

Rating Definition:

Good, retaining most of the period replated nickel with a patch of flaking on the cylinder and a few scattered spots of covered over pitting. The cylinder is a modern made replacement. The undersized replacement grips are good with some worn checkering. Mechanically needs work as hammer only has three clicks. An extremely rare documented SAA flattop target revolver chambered in .22 rimfire missing from even the most advanced Colt collections.
