Description:

Manufactured in 1909 with the standard two-line barrel address, "COLT D.A. 38" on the left of the barrel, three-line patent marking and Rampant Colt on the left of the frame, matching visible numbers, standard features, and fitted with pearl grips. The included factory letter confirms the current configuration (grips not listed) as well as shipment to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Company in Chicago on 24 March 1909. Included consignor research suggests that this was the revolver used in the shooting of Anaheim City Marshal John Kellenberger on 9 July 1912. The revolver used in the crime is not listed by serial number but reports from the time suggest that the revolver in question was a double action in .38 caliber. Another newspaper article from the time suggests that when Kellenberger recovered from his wounds he retained the two bullets removed from his chest as well as the revolver that fired them, which very well could be this exact revolver. Also included are various pictures of Kellenberger.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 50% plus original blue finish and 30% of the original case colors primarily in sheltered areas with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina and a few scattered patches of very light pitting. The grips are fine with a few chips visible on interior left panel and scattered light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The Curt McClymond Collection.
