Manufactured in the 1880s, this large frame, or Pocket Army, revolver features a round barrel, fluted cylinder, top strap and bird's head butt. The revolver is profusely engraved in the distinctive Merwin, Hulbert & Co. style with a highly desirable vignette on the side plate. This vignette depicts a raging bull. The frame is marked "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER" followed "1873" on the left side and "MERWIN, HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY" on the right side. The left side of the barrel has the two-line address/patent date marking. Matching assembly numbers are on the grip frame, barrel and cylinder. The revolver is fitted with pearl grips featuring a relief carved steer head on the right panel. Comes with a correct period basket weave pattern tooled leather holster which is marked "44 CAL/ARMY" on the belt loop.

Exceptionally fine, retaining 90% untouched original nickel plating with light flaking and high edge wear on the balance. The hammer has patterns of original case colors and a period shortened spur. Traces of original blue remain on the trigger guard. The engraving is crisp. The slightly undersized grips are very fine with crisp raised relief carving and attractive colors. Hammer does not lock at the half cock position, otherwise action cycles properly. The holster is fine with the security strap and toe stitching removed, drainage hole and two slits on back appear added and overall crisp pattern. It is not often that we catalog period correct holsters for this model.
