Description:

Little is known about this make other than being listed in J. S. Morris' "Business Directory of Sheffield as a "Bowie Knife Maker" in 1862. Despite the plethora of blade makers in Sheffield, this was the first year Bowie knife makers were specifically listed, with only five little-known makers including Kitchins being listed as such. 12 3/4 inches overall length with 7 7/8 inch spear point blade that widens towards the point and is acid etched on one side with "Arkansas Toothpick" in script surrounded by scroll flourishes with "SAML KITCHIN/SHEFFIELD" on the ricasso under a snake trademark. The thick oval guard is of brass. Grip scales of antique ivory secured with German silver rivets, pommel, and inscription plate on one side. The included sheath is of black leather with German silver fittings.

Rating Definition:

Fine, the blade shows mostly a bright grey patina with some scattered light pitting, evidence of light sharpening/cleaning. Brass guard and German silver fittings generally showing an attractive antique patina. The grip scales good with one side having a couple spots of discoloration and some hairline age cracks and the other side significantly better. The sheath is good with moderate wear.
