Description:

John Krider was an American sporting goods maker and retailer in Philadelphia where he made everything from fly rods and fishing reels to top quality shotguns, rifles, and pistols. This 10 gauge double was likely stocked and finished by the Krider firm using an English barreled action and features browned, dovetail lump Damascus steel barrels with a single bead sight, smooth concave rib marked "PHILADELPHIA", chambers measured at 2 3/4 inches with single extractor, and London proofs from the 1875 to 1887 period. The barrel tubes are marked "T. KILBY" for Thomas Kilby a Birmingham barrel and gun making firm active from roughly 1851 to 1940. Casehardened action with sculpted fences and hammers, standard London "crown/V" proofs on the water table, locks marked "JOHN KRIDER", and lightly scroll engraved, knurled underlever. Checkered, wedge fastened forearm and straight grip stock with relief carved tear drop accents, blank silver initial oval, and checkered horn buttplate. Barrel and stock measurements are: bore diameter at 9 inches from breech proofed at "10" (.775) and measured at .777/.779; choke constriction .025/.027; minimum wall thickness .039/.039; drop at comb 1 3/4 inches; drop at heel 2 5/8 inches; length of pull 14 inches; weight 11 lbs. 5 oz. This shotgun was previously housed in the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia until recently.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with 95% browned finish on the barrels, strong visible Damascus pattern, clearly legible rib marking, some scattered surface scratches, and traces of light surface oxidation. The action and locks have 80% bright original case colors with silvering on the edges, and mostly dove gray patina on the lever and trigger guard face. The wood is also very fine with attractive figure and grain, crisp checkering, and some small scattered scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent.
