Description:

Manufactured from 1878 to 1892 with this example featuring wonderful L. D. Nimschke New York engraving. Profuse floral scrollwork on a stippled background is engraved on the side of the barrel, sides of the frame and cylinder. Amongst the engraving on the frame are finely detailed vignettes showcasing a dog head on the left and a stag on the right. Zig-zag line patterns are engraved on the cylinder flutes, rear of the cylinder, top strap and sides of the barrel. The back strap is inscribed "J.H. CLEMES" and features an engraved entwining line motif. Matching serial numbers are on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. The period French fitted case contains a cartridge block holding 22 rounds. Although not positively identified, period publications reference an English engineer and metallurgist holding a lifetime membership to the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and a Colorado financier of Bellan Investment Co. of Denver with the name "J.H. Clemes."

Rating Definition:

Excellent, retaining 95% original nickel finish with a few areas of smooth gray patina. 97% plus original case colors remain on the hammer. The engraving is crisp. The grips are also excellent with a few minor handling marks and attractive fiery colors. Mechanically excellent. The case is very good with the exterior of the lid having an inscription plate removed, some typical high edge wear on the lining and some minor handling/storage marks. An awesome dual-panel scene Nimschke engraved S&W! Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
