Description:

This c. 1770-1780s pistol has faint maker's marks on the lock and barrel that appear to be "RIMES." The barrel also has "LONDON" and Tower proofs. John Rimes and his son Nathaniel were gunmakers in London. The elder Rimes was also an East India Co. contractor in the 1770s. The pistol has Asian calligraphic markings on the barrel ahead of the proofs, on the stock behind the barrel tang, and on the wrist escutcheon, and the markings are likely from India, then partially controlled by the East India Company. Most of the components are brass which is more resistant to corrosion and was popular with British seamen. The side plate and escutcheon have martial motifs. The trigger guard has an acorn finial, and it and the pommel have some floral engraving.

Rating Definition:

Very good with attractive natural aged patina on the brass, brown patina on the iron, some general mild dings and scratches, and moderate overall wear. The stock is good and has a spliced at the pommel, thin cracks in the wrist, worn shell carving at the barrel tang, a chip at the nose of the lock, and splits at the forend tip. Mechanically fine.
