Manufactured c. 1840s as an exhibition quality piece and marked by C. Rehbichler of Munich and Valentin Funk & Son. Other guns with locks of the same unusual pattern (but without the odd mechanical features) and stocks with relief similar carving are known with Funk markings. The barrels have a post front sight, a silver and copper inlaid arrow pointing towards a personified crescent moon and stars in gold inlay and the maker's signature "C REHBICHLER IN MUNCHEN" also in gold inlay. "V. FUNK.&.S" is on the bottom of the right breech plug, and the plugs are banded, engraved with scrollwork on the bolsters, and have a scroll and bestial gold inlay on the top rib. Most of the fittings are scroll engraved, and some have gold backgrounds or accents. The locks are peculiar and have external half-cock sears and hammer links, relief chiseled boar heads on the tails with gold accents, scrollwork engraving on the plates, "-REHBICHLER-" (right) and "-IN MUNCHEN-" (left) in gold inlay, and winged, bipedal beasts on the extraordinary relief chiseled hammers. The checkered stock has raised leaf and scroll carving at the breech and a prominent cheek rest with scroll and floral raised relief carving at the rear. The butt is bare other than a heel plate. Sling swivels are fitted to the middle barrel band and butt.

Fine with light brown and gray patina, subtle original Damascus patterns, generally strong original gold, crisp engraving, light pitting, and mild wear. The wood is also fine with crisp checkering and relief carving, minor edge wear, attractive figure, and small dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
