Manufactured in circa 1845-50. With browned damascus steel smooth barrels with smooth rib signed "JOHN WILLIAM EDGE," front brass bead sight, two ramrod pipes, and brass tipped hardwood rod. Engraved breech with platinum discs, and partridge engraved on the rib extension. Intricately engraved hammers with eagle and snake theme intertwined in the scrollwork. Shaped locks with scroll engraving surrounding a game scene of pheasant on the right, partridge on the left, and signed "J.W. EDGE", on each lock. Trigger guard engraved with a stalking setter and extended tang marked "1455", and smooth double triggers with engraved pineapple finial trigger plate and ramrod insert. Checkered straight grip walnut stock with silver oval initial escutcheon on top of the wrist, and extended engraved butt plate. With original maker's case with blank brass initial escutcheon, lined in green baize with maker's label and includes a period labeled cap tin, and several wads.

Very fine with nearly all of the rebrowned finish remaining with some softening to the barrel markings and some smooth pitting. The remaining components have a mostly bright grey patina with some areas of pitting and discoloration. The refinished wood has a heavy coat of varnish with some scratches and dents, as well as some chipping to the forend, and well-defined checkering. Case is good with numerous scratches and crack running the length of the top, with slight tears in the interior, and an overall staining to the label. Mechanically excellent.
