Description:

The included factory letter confirms the serial number, gauge, chokes, stock, and July 25, 1934 date of shipment. The order information and special instructions on the letter state to fill the order a set of barrels was taken from gun number 5775, bored for WS-1/WS-2 chokes, and fitted to this gun, and that the gun was to be presented in person to J.W. Hession by shop foreman J. Marchand. The gun was presented to Hession on June 13, 1934, and then on July 25, 1934 is listed as being "custom built for Alfred E. Berdzheimer using barrel #5775". There is no information available on Berdzheimer, however, Hession was well known as an accomplished long range shooting expert, and employee of Winchester/Western Cartridge Co as well as the man who delivered the famous Chrysler gun to Walter Chrysler in 1934. Blued Winchester Proof Steel chopper lump barrels with a Bradley red bead sight on the concave matte rib marked "CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER" with 2 3/4 inch chambers, automatic ejectors, engine turned flats (remnants of original barrel number "5775" visible under current serial number), "WS-/WS-2" marked chokes, and wedges of fine scroll engraving at the breech. The action is fully engraved in a tight flowing scroll pattern referred to as a "5A" pattern on page 184 of "Winchester's Finest: The Model 21" by Ned Schwing. This pattern is also found on the aforementioned Walter Chrysler gun (Sn: 5437), and several Winchester advertisements of the period. Fitted with a single gold washed trigger with selector, and manual sliding tang safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" marking. Attractively figured French walnut beavertail forearm and pistol grip stock with engraved forearm fittings, engraved blue steel grip cap, blank initial oval, and engraved skeleton buttplate on a checkered bare butt. Includes a leather takedown case with snap caps, oiler, and cleaning rod heads. The lid of the case is stamped "H.H. HELM/165 BROADWAY N.Y.C.". Stock measurements are: drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/8 inches; length of pull 14 1/2 inches.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as professionally (likely factory) refurbished with 95% of the current blue finish remaining on the barrels, some visible thinning near the muzzles, and well defined, slightly softened engraving at the breech. The action has 98% of the blue finish with slightly softened engraving, and traces of slightly uneven polishing on the trigger plate. The wood is very fine with sharp checkering, some small scattered dings, attractive figure, and sharp engraving on the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. Case is poor with broken handle, scuffs and scrapes, some adhesive damage, and missing corner protectors.
