Description:

This M1 Garand rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory in April 1945 and subsequently modified to M1D configuration by Springfield Armory between 1951-1953. Springfield Armory converted 21,380 M1 rifles to M1D configuration between July 1, 1951 and June 30, 1953. These rifles can be identified by the uniform Springfield gray-green parkerized finish and Springfield Armory rebuild inspection marks on the left side of the stock. The rifle is fitted with the special M1D barrel with telescopic sight mounting block and marked "SA-7-51" on the right side of the chamber. The right side of the chamber is also stamped with a "P" proof, a punch-mark and "T" targeting mark. The rifle has the late T105 rear sight, "-19SA" bolt, relieved "D35382 6 SA" operating rod, and "-12 SA" trigger housing with milled trigger guard. The early production M84, 2.2 power scope is blued with sliding sun shield, rubber eye-piece, post and cross-wire cross hair and parkerized mount. The plate on the right side of the scope body is marked: "TELESCOPE/M84/SERIAL No. 7288". The barrel is fitted with a stamped Hart M2 flash-hider. The stock, forearm and handguard are matching, oil-finished, walnut. The left side of the stock is stamped with the Springfield Armory "S.A." rebuild mark in an open box followed by "RA". Two encircled "P" proof marks are stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. The stock is fitted with a russet leather, lace-on, cheek-piece marked: "MRT/1 52" on the right side and "MRT" marked M1 web sling. Most M1D rifles were manufactured to M1D configuration by Army Ordnance Depots during the 1960s. The depot modified M1D rifles generally have mixed parts and do not have the same quality finish as the M1D rifles assembled by Springfield Armory in 1951-1953. Includes the original shipping box from Anniston Depot, Alabama, original DoD release form with inventory list, cleaning tools, oiler, canvas scope pouch, and sealed package containing parts/cleaning tools.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine. This rifle is all correct as upgraded to M1D specification by Springfield Armory and retains 98% of the Springfield parkerized finish. The rifle appears to be as-issued and shows only very limited storage wear. The stock, handguard and forearm are in nearly new condition with crisp inspection and proof marks. The leather cheek piece is in near mint condition. The M84 telescopic sight retains 98% of the original blue finish with excellent optics and mint rubber eyepiece. This is a top example of a Springfield Armory assembled Springfield M1D sniper rifle. It would be very difficult to find a better example of this important U.S. Army sniper rifle.
