Description:

This caliber .30 International Match (IM) rifle with 30 inch Winchester barrel was manufactured by Springfield Armory c. 1924 for Olympic competition. Springfield Armory assembled 40 heavy barrel match rifles for the 1924 Olympic Games with Pope, Remington and Winchester barrels. Fifteen of these rifles were selected for the 1924 International Rifle Team; the remainder were held in reserve. The Springfield Research Service letter that accompanies this rifle states it was shipped to Frankfort Arsenal on January 24, 1924, "for accuracy testing with Congressional directed ammunition, for 1924 Olympic competition". This rifle has a 30 inch Winchester barrel with 12-inch twist. The barrel has a modified Browning Automatic Rifle front sight band, Winchester globe front sight and telescopic sight blocks. The receiver has a Lyman 48 rear sight with 14-graduations. The polished National Match style bolt had a reversed safety and headless cocking piece. The firing pin has been turned down and fluted to improve lock time. This rifle is fitted with a German style double set trigger (see "The Springfield 1903 Rifles" by Brophy, page 142) used on IM rifles and modified trigger guard with bronze palm rest bracket and cork palm rest. A hole drilled in the bottom of the trigger guard allows for adjustment of the trigger. The rifle has a high grade walnut custom stock with prominent cheek piece, fine fleur-de-lis checkered panels on the pistol grip and semi-gloss, hand rubbed finish. The stock retains the aluminum hook butt-plate and sling rail fitted to the original 1924 IM rifle stocks. The barrel has a blue finish. The receiver and trigger guard have a dark parkerized finish, the bolt, extractor and cocking piece are armory polished, and the safety is casehardened. The receiver has the standard Springfield Armory four-line markings above the serial number. The bolt is not serial numbered and has the "W/L/3" steel lot code on the top of the handle. The trigger and trigger guard are stamped with the assembly number "2". The underside of the barrel is stamped: "23" followed by a small triangle proof mark, "17", an encircled "VP" mark, "12" and "MNS" all reading from the receiver toward the muzzle. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONNECTICUT. U.S.A." centered below the front scope block followed by "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" in two lines and "-.30 GOV'T -'06-12" T-". The oval Winchester "WP" proofmark is stamped to the left of the rear scope block. The rifle is complete with an Unertl 10X target scope with aluminum target rings.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 98% of the blue finish and sharp markings. The receiver and trigger guard have 98% of the pre-war Springfield Armory parkerized finish. The bolt has the distinctive armory polishing marks on either side of the safety lug. The nicely figured walnut stock is in excellent condition with crisp checkering and minimal handling wear. The Unertl scope is in excellent condition. This is an exceptional example of a rare, well-documented Springfield Armory Caliber .30 1924 International Match Rifle.
