Description:

This is an outstanding example of a Model 1941 Johnson Semi-Automatic rifle as manufactured by the Cranston Arms Company. These rifles were an early competitor to the M1 Garand, that featured several unique features such as a stripper clip reloadable 10 round rotary magazine, a short recoiling barrel which started the cycling of the rifle, and a takedown feature that allowed the barrel to be easily removed and stored in a parachute jump bag for the Para Marines. They were manufactured with a two-piece walnut stock, and a one piece cast receiver with a perforated front section that acts as a barrel heat shield. The top of the receiver has the Johnson patent numbers followed by "CAL. 30-06 SEMI-AUTO/"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A." over serial number "A5041". The rear of the receiver has a five-pointed star over "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." The tangent rear sight is correctly graduated in meters. The barrel is marked ".30-06/41" on the front face of the collar and "J.A./30-06" on the rear of the barrel over the chamber. In August 1940, the Netherlands Purchasing Commission ordered 10,200 Johnson Automatic rifles for Dutch colonial troops in the East Indies. Before they could be delivered, the Japanese captured the Dutch colonies preventing their delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps tested and obtained a limited number of the Dutch contract Model 1941 rifles as a war expedient rifle supply until they could receive the new M1 Garand rifles. The small five-pointed star stamped on the right rear end of the receiver was used by Dutch inspectors indicating it was accepted by the Netherlands Purchasing Commission.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus original parkerized finish remaining, some small areas of light edge wear, and some visible small handling marks and surface scratches. The wood is also excellent with some scattered small dings, and a few small slivers absent at the buttplate tang. Mechanically excellent.
