Description:

This is a very rare example of an early and highly desirable Mauser Model 1896 carbine with its original matching shoulder stock. An almost exact duplicate is shown on page 170-171 in the book "System Mauser" by Schroeder and Breathed. Based on the noted serial numbers of all the various model of Mauser carbines, only a few hundred in total were ever manufactured by the Mauser factory. One very noticeable feature of this rare carbine is that it has an elongated chamber area. This carbine is also fitted with a 15 3/4 inch barrel, a milled frame panels, large ring hammer, long extractor, single lug firing pin and old style safety. The top of the chamber area is marked "WAFFENFABRIK/MAUSER/OBERNDORF A/N". The left side of the barrel extension has the serial number, "624," which is also stamped on the lower left side of the frame and grip frame/stock lug area. The right rear frame panel is marked "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER/OBERNDORF A. NECKAR," and there is a "crown/U" proof on top of the rear of the breech bolt. It has the distinctive 50-1000 meter rear sight and ramp front sight with a fixed bead on top. There are matching numbers on the frame, trigger assembly, hammer, breech bolt and barrel extension. The lower receiver extension has a one-piece carbine length buttstock that is approximately 15 inches long from the front of the lower receiver metal to the buttplate. The buttstock has a hard rubber buttplate with an intertwined "MW" on the end. This beautiful carbine has a rust blued finish on the major parts and components, and the extractor, trigger, bolt stop, rear sight elevator and safety lever all have a heat blued finish. The forend and buttstock are made of a smooth European walnut. It is complete with a Guide Gear aluminum storage case.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 65% plus of the original blue finish overall with wear visible on the high spots with the underside edges of the floorplate, grip strap areas of the buttstock having faded and turned a gray patina. The sides of the frame and barrel showing a slightly fading blue finish mixed with some minor specking of brown spots. The forend and detachable buttstock are both very good with numerous light handling marks in the sides mixed with some slightly heavier dents. The left side of the forend has a small, one inch crack starting at the rear edge inline with the left frame rail. A solid representative example of an original and very rare Mauser Broomhandle carbine that obviously saw some real, honest field use.
