The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a round barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, and casehardened receiver when received in the warehouse on May 12, 1880 and shipped the same day. The barrel is fitted with a beaded Lyman blade front sight and an "1876" marked folding ladder rear sight and stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight and "CAL 45-60" at the breech. The cartridge elevator is factory marked "45-60" and hand marked "TSC." The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1876" and drilled and tapped for sight mounting (single hole with filler screw absent). The second model receiver features a dust cover guide rail attached to the receiver with two screws and dust cover with oval finger guide stamped on top. The checkered forearm and pistol grip stock are X deluxe walnut. The buttstock has an ebony grip insert and a trapdoor crescent buttplate (cleaning rod not included). The left side of the lower tang is stamped "X 818." The assembly number "818" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate. This '76 is only seven serial numbers apart from Granville Stuart’s historic "The Boss Game Gun of All Creation" Model 1876, serial number 10001.

Very good plus. The barrel, magazine tube and dust cover retain 30% original blue finish with the balance a brown-gray patina. Traces of original niter blue remain on the loading gate. The hammer, receiver, lever, and forend cap have silvered out with 25% bright original case color around the trigger and on the lower tang. The wood is also very good with minor dings and scratches and blemishes in the checkering. Mechanically excellent. A solid representative example of a Winchester deluxe Model 1876 rifle!
