The sights are not mentioned, but the rifle has either special ordered or aftermarket sights consisting of a golden blade and globe combination front sight and a Vernier tang peep sight. The rifle also has a standard adjustable sporting rear sight, the two-line address and patent marking ahead of the rear sight, "38 W.C.F." on top at the breech, an adjustable short range Vernier peep sight, "38 CAL." on the cartridge elevator, a plain trigger, attractive casehardened finish on the frame as well as the forend cap, hammer, lever, and buttplate; blue finish on the barrel, magazine tube, dust cover, loading gate, and screws; and walnut stock and forearm with some attractive grain, subtle figure, and empty stock compartment.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 90% plus original blue finish, 80% plus original case colors with especially vibrant colors on the frame, some patches of mottled brown patina, and only minor overall wear mostly from handling and storage. 95% of the original nitre blue remains on the loading gate. The wood is very fine and has glossy refreshed varnish, some light dings and scrapes, and general minor wear. Mechanically excellent. This is an outstanding Model 1873 with a very beautiful casehardened finish that will be a welcome addition to any Winchester collector. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
