The accompanying factory letter lists this highly desirable Sheriff's Model 1877 Lighting with .38 caliber chambering, illegible barrel length and finish, pearl stocks and factory engraving when shipped to Roberts, Hardwick & Taylor of Sherman, Texas, on August 30, 1886. This shipment was for two guns. The revolver features Helfricht style floral scroll engraving on a stippled background along with zig-zag line bordering and flourishes. A fan pattern is engraved on the recoil shield and loading gate. The cylinder flats feature sun bust type patterns. The ejectorless Sheriff's Model barrel features the desirable acid etched caliber designation panel. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line Hartford address, and the left side of the frame has the patent dates marking. Matching serial numbers are on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap. The grips are pearl and the right panel is inscribed "F. CARPENTER." The identity of "F. Carpenter" unfortunately is not documented and without a first name is difficult to track down. Among the possible individuals in Texas in the period are Confederate veteran Franklin Carpenter (1832-1906) and Francis T. Carpenter (1847-1912). According to Colt historian R.L. Wilson, "factory records indicate approximately 250 Lightnings in .38 caliber [were engraved]" and "their usual finish was nickel plating."

Fine, retaining 50% original nickel plating with the balance a smooth gray patina. The etched panel is faint, but legible. Some original niter blue remains on the hammer and trigger, and traces of original niter blue remain on the screws. The engraving is crisp overall. The grips are fine with minimal inside edge chipping and some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. An attractive and rare factory engraved Sheriff's Model 1877 Lightning that is missing from even the most advanced Colt collections. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
