Description:

Around 50,000 of these carbines were manufactured between 1863 and 1865 for the Union Army. Spencer carbines are easily one of the most advanced and popular weapons of the war and remained important in the Indian Wars of the latter half of the 19th century, especially prior to the widespread adoption of the Springfield trapdoor. This example has standard markings and features, two faint cartouches on the wrist, an a "J" carved in the left of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Good, with traces of original blue and case colors, primarily in sheltered areas, with the balance a mottle grey-brown patina and a few scattered patches of light surface pitting. The wood is also good with wear visible on the left side of the forearm, some minor dings and scratches scattered throughout and visible cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
